Queenstown is the ultimate destination to experience good food, high adrenaline adventure sports, and the ultimate in relaxation with jaw dropping scenery as the background to your adventure!
During our latest trip we stayed at the St Moritz. This hotel is part of MGallery by Sofitel which comprises a collection of captivating boutique hotels that exude luxury, charisma and a profoundly local character. In addition to offering impeccable service, five-star facilities and captivating designs, each hotel offers guests the opportunity to experience a ‘Memorable Moment‘ curated by the staff themselves.
Memorable Moments take many forms at MGallery by Sofitel, however remain deeply rooted in the local landscape, culture and hotel character. Your moment could be something as intimate as a beachside candlelit dinner, or as grandiose as a helicopter ride to survey a local landmark. In any case, the experience is likely to be one of the most defining of your stay. I will reveal a bit later in this post the Memorable Moment created by Hotel St Mortiz for us!
The trip begin with an early morning flight to Queenstown from Melbourne. From the moment we approached the runway into Queenstown we were greeted by the breathtaking view of the mountain peaks covered in snow. It was an exciting sneak peek to what was to come.
After checking in at Hotel St Moritz and freshening up in our rooms, we took a picnic prepared by Lombardi Restaurant and had a scenic lunch by Lake Wakatipu. Relaxing for a few hours with a picnic is a great way to appreciate the beauty of Queenstown’s majestic scenery and I highly recommend it!
For dinner, we headed to the infamous Fergburger! Starting out as a random hole in the wall burger joint where inebriated locals could get their late night hunger fix, they’ve now moved into one of the main streets of Queenstown and expanded to include a bakery and ice cream parlour!
After dinner, we were lucky enough to be in town for the Queenstown Jazz Festival so we managed to catch a show.
The next morning we enjoyed breakfast at the Lombardi restaurant. There are enthralling views of lake and mountains from Lombardi. Serving breakfast from 6am through to a la carte dinner each evening, Lombardi dining room is a popular choice for Queenstown locals and guests alike.
After breakfast, the group met in the hotel lobby in our alpine active wear, ready for a cruisy day on the trails with stops to enjoy the amazing scenery by Around The Basin Bike Tours. Around The Basin are the local experts specialising in mountain biking adventures on the Queenstown, Arrowtown and Gibbston River Trials. Offering half day, full day and custom mountain bike tours in the Queenstown area.
Before we set off, we had a coffee and the infamous sticky bun at Provisions at Arrowtown. After fueling up on delicious treats, we set off on our bike ride. A 15km scenic bike ride which included crossing the 80m Edgar suspension bridge which was quite a thrill to ride across.
We arrived at the historic Kawarau Bridge, also home to AJ Hackett’s Bungy site, the world’s first bungy operation. Jon made an unexpected last minute decision to attempt the bungy where he dipped his head in the water on the jump!
After a thrilling morning, we were all ready for lunch at the award-winning Gibbston Valley Winery.
We recovered for pre-dinner drinks at Lombardi Bar overlooking Lake Wakatipu to the mountains. Lombardi boasts a wine list that focuses on the famous Pinot Noir variety legendary in the Central Otago Region. Try Pinot, Pinot, Pinot! If you prefer a cocktail, pick the Froze (pictured above)!
Dinner followed at Lombardi Restaurant’s Private Dining Room – The Library. A stylish establishment popular with locals and house guest serving international cuisine. We experienced Pinot Pinot Pinot – a wine matched dinner showcasing some of the region’s famous pinot vintages.
The next morning, we were up bright and early for lake-edge yoga with Soul Journeys.
Unfortunately the weather changed on us after yoga and much to our dismay our planned ‘Memorable Moment’ had to be cancelled. The Hotel St Moritz however is always prepared! The concierge pulled out some last minute stops and we were whisked away on a luxury boat cruise around Lake Wakapitu with a beautiful antipasto and a couple of bottles of Veuve Cliquot for good measure!
After our adventure on water, we decided to enjoy the hotel facilities and relax in the Hot Tub Garden. Tucked away in a native terraced garden are two traditional cedar hot tubs overlooking the imposing Cecil and Walter Peaks. A tranquil spot to conclude the day and enjoy the sunset while sipping on a glass of Veuve Clicquot champagne!
The next morning we were lucky enough that the weather conditions improved and we were able to discover the Hotel St Moritz ‘Memorable Moment’, a scenic helicopter flight (hosted by The Helicopter Line) across Lake Wakatipu to ‘The Ledge’ on nearby Cecil Peak. We enjoyed absolutely serenity with mountains as far as the eye can see. We were spoilt with a specially prepared Lombardi champagne picnic. This experience was a real treat for the eyes, ears, taste buds and soul. Truly a moment we will never forget! We’d highly recommend this experience if you travel to Queenstown and stay at the Hotel St Moritz!
We shared many ‘Memorable Moments‘ on this trip and would definitely highly recommend a visit to anyone seeking out an experience of a lifetime!
