How to Wear Red Lipstick

If I had to pick one makeup item from my makeup bag that is face-brightening and mood altering in seconds, it would have to be the red lipstick. It is the fastest way to transform and lift your look (not to mention a instant teeth whitener)!

1. To test what colour red best suits you, try a test patch on the top of your index finger. The colour on your index finger will be a closer shade toy our natural lip tone rather than testing the colour on the back of your hands.

2. Consider the lighting. If you are going to be outdoors, pick a softer or sheerer shade. For evening, where there will be flash photography, go bolder so the flash doesn’t wash out your lipstick colour.
3. If you have thin lips, avoid deep reds. They will make your lips look smaller.
4. Don’t throw out red lipstick in a shade that doesn’t work for you. It can still be wearable with a touch of lipgloss. Top it with a gold gloss to warm and soften it. To take the red to a bluer shade, add a pink gloss.

1. Keep your lips as the focus, don’t play up your eyes. Pair red lipstick with the lightest possible eye make up. A little mascara, eyeliner and neutral eye shadow will go a long way.
2. When it comes to blush, it depends on the colour and depth of the lipstick. If it is a bright coral, either soft coral, peach or warm pink blush works well. For deeper reds and berries, go for neutral beiges, browns and pinks as they add a little colour but not too much. They tend to be more defining rather than add a pop.
3. Coordinate your look. Dot a tiny amount of lipstick on the apples of your cheecks. Then blend in with your fingers.

1. Before applying lipstick, make sure your lips are semi hydrated by using a lip balm. This will make the application smoother.
2. Be precise. Whether you are applying red lipstick with a brush or straight from the tube, never do it in a moving vehicle. The results will not be pretty.
3. Applying lip liner will give your lipstick more staying power and more definition to your lips. Always use a red lip liner shade that matches your lipstick colour. If it doesn’t match perfectly you will end up with a tow-tone effect. Otherwise, find a lip liner in a shade close to your natural lip colour and use it to outline your lips.
4. To prevent “bleeding”, apply a little concealer around the edge of your mouth.
5. To avoid getting lipstick on your teeth, after applying lipstick, put your finger in your mouth. Purse your lips around it and then slowly pull your fingers out to remove the excess lipstick colour.
